Orpheus Chatzivasileiou (PhD ’19 in Chemical Engineering) will share his personal stories. Born and raised in Athens, Orpheus completed his PhD thesis under the supervision of Prof. Gregory Stephanopoulos (ChemE). Orpheus was also a veteran leader of the Graduate Student Council, serving as the two-term Secretary and subsequently the Vice President. His great work has granted him the Karl Taylor Compton Prize, the highest award in recognition to his devotion to the MIT community. After MIT, Orpheus started working as an Organism Engineer at Ginkgo Bioworks, a Boston-based biotech company that focuses on genetic bacteria engineering. Since Orpheus graduated less than a year ago, he would be more than happy to share his insight on industry R&D, transition from grad school, and differences and similarities with academia. He would also love to speak to undergraduate and master’s students on pursuing doctoral programs. You can preview his profile via LinkedIn.

Young Alumni Fireside chat features the career trajectory of an MIT grad alum. Speaking in an informal lecture style, these events take place in the form of a moderated interview followed by Q&A from the audience. In light of the pandemics, some of our discussion will focus on career exploration, job hunting, and networking during self-isolation. Other topics that are explored in these talks include:
-Academia vs. Industry
-Career transitions
-What did they struggle in their careers?
-How do they deal with your own and others’ expectations, and with impostor syndrome?
-How do they stay technical (should they prefer)?
-How do they keep themselves motivated?
